Get Into MTB with Freeride Freida

Thinking about trying mountain biking? Good news, you don't need to be fearless, super fit or know all the fancy terms. Everyone starts somewhere.

Here are a few simple tips that'll help you feel more confident on the trails from day one.

Beginner tips from Freeride Freida

1. Look where you want to go

Your bike usually follows your eyes. Instead of staring at the rock or root you're trying to avoid, keep your eyes focused on the trail ahead and where you want to end up. It sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference.

2. Stay in a neutral position

Think soft arms, soft legs. Keep your elbows slightly bent, knees relaxed and your weight centred over the bike. Let the bike move underneath you instead of fighting every bump.

3. Lean the bike - not your body

When riding corners, try leaning the bike while keeping your body a little more balanced over the tires. This helps the tires find grip and makes cornering feel smoother and more controlled.

4. Speed is your friend (sometimes)

It might feel scary, but riding too slowly can actually make technical sections harder. A little momentum helps the bike roll over roots, rocks and uneven terrain more naturally.

5. Relax

The tighter you are, the harder the trail feels. Take a deep breath, loosen your grip on the handlebars and trust the bike. You'll ride smoother and probably have a lot more fun.

6. Practice the basics

You don't need the biggest jumps or steepest trails. Find an easy green or blue trail and ride it again and again. Confidence comes from repetition.

Gear up

Comfortable clothes, plenty of water and a helmet are the best place to start.

P.S. A few little secrets...

Everyone walks sometimes.

Everyone has bad days. Even the riders you look up to.

Don't let one tough ride convince you that you're not improving. The best thing you can do is show up, ride what feels good, walk what doesn't, and keep having fun.

You'll get better with every ride, and chances are you'll feel a whole lot better afterwards. It's pretty hard to think about everyday worries when you're flying through the forest.
