Surfbrudar

Hi Sofia! You’re the girl behind @surfbrudar (which basically means “surf chicks” in Swedish). What’s the idea behind it, and when did you realize this was something you wanted to start?

The vision of Surfbrudar was born during a surf summer in the Arctic Circle. I had grown up in Sweden not knowing anything about surfing but for long before I even surfed for the first time felt such a longing towards the sport and the ocean. As I finished school I had already been applying for jobs in surf towns for many years and one day I received an answer in my mailbox from a surfhouse in Portugal. Here is where my journey started, surrounded by some of the coolest women who challenged and inspired me until I took my first green waves. I surfed a little here and there and learned little by little but it wasn’t until I decided to move to Norway for 6 months that I could surf in my everyday life. This was the first time I started seeing progression in the water and it really caught me like a bug, I couldn’t get enough of it.

Although often times I would find myself surfing with few or no other girls in the line up and it seemed the Scandinavian countries was missing a platform for the female surf community. I befriended one girl on the parking lot one day and as we surfed together I noticed my confidence shifting in the water and I dared go for waves that I usually didn’t and position myself at the peak of the breaking wave rather than the shoulder. This shift in confidence obviously creates a snowball effect where if I go for more waves, I would take more waves, I would progress faster right? Simple girl math. Therefore a vision began to shape of createating a big circle of friends who share waves, stoke, encouragement and inspiration.

The photos from your fall Morocco trip look amazing — they definitely make the end of winter feel a little less sad. Can you tell us more about the trip?

Thank you! This was the third time we returned to our favorite place in Morocco to simply surf, eat, hang out and surf again. The aim of our trips are connections with like minded individuals who can push you in your surf progress. Whether you are the world’s okayest surfer, never saw a surfboard before or if you have been catching waves for many years.

We live 14 women together in our cozy Moroccan villa close to the ocean and many different waves for all conditions and levels. Our local team at the site takes care of us like their extended family and we surf from morning to evening with their knowledge about the spots in the area. Between the surfs we are fueled with traditional Moroccan food and practice our surf skills on land through surf skate and different workshops.

What can someone expect from joining one of your trips, and where are you heading next?

You can expect to fill your heart up with love, energy and connections. This is your ticket straight into a community filled with adventurous women who you learn from and who become this close knitted group of friends. This summer we will be hosting a few weeks up in Northern Norway and have plans for new destinations for this upcoming fall and winter, keep an eye out!

We spotted some Eivy at your event and got curious — which piece from our lineup is your go-to staple for your trips?

Yeees correct! When traveling for surfing I like to have versatile and comfortable pieces that can be used for multiple things. For example the venture biker shorts has become a must have shorts for me as they are the most perfect biker short, with a thick fabric that sits perfect on your body and curves. I enjoy these as much for yoga as for running or even to surf in on warmer days and destinations. Secondly I always wear my outdoor vest especially when traveling as you can stay organized and have all your essentials, passports etc in the pockets.

Thank you for pepping more girls to get out there and try something new, you're a true inspiration!
